Who has the lowest price Massachusetts Auto insurance?
As a Massachusetts auto insurance broker I often get asked the question: Who has the lowest price for auto insurance?
I start to answer, stutter and start to answer again.
“It depends …” and I begin the long, exotic tale about Massachusetts auto insurance.
There once was a time, eons ago, when all companies had the same price for auto insurance as dictated by The Mighty: MA Auto Insurance Commissioner.
Wide-eyed, my listeners’ attention captivated, I continue:
There was one company, however, that offered the Holy Grail of auto discounts: The 5% AAA – auto club discount. That company was: Commerce. Commerce was The King.
Then, in 2008 “managed competition,” competitive rating, auto insurance rode into Massachusetts on a white horse followed, in 2012, by a scurrying green lizard.
Commerce Insurance morphed into MAPFRE and waved their 33% Massachusetts auto market share adios.

Basically, the 11 point something Commerce/MAPFRE has lost has gone to Geico. (This, of course, is an over-simplification. They, and others, have taken business from others.)
But this, of course, as is everything, is just the beginning of our story.
Who has the lowest price for Massachusetts auto insurance?
In 2008 our growing independent agency took on new company appointments (including Progressive).
America changed the way we shop for everything, including auto insurance. We flocked to the internet. We compared prices, we compared coverage, we compared companies.
Companies changed the way they price their products.
One company marketing representative expressed delight when he declared their auto rates had an infinite amount of price points. Their price went infinitely out of site as their MA market share dwindled.
Insurance Companies each charted out their course and defined who and what their target market would be.
Often companies targeted the same market and a premium, blood-bath of consumer savings ensued. In fact, it could be argued, continues today.
Which leads me to, and in conclusion, who has the lowest price for auto insurance in Massachusetts?

Independent Agent Added Value
Unlike the Liberty Mutuals and The Amicas, we write insurance with many different companies. We represent our clients, as opposed to representing the companies that we place business with. We spend the time to find out which companies are the best fit for our clients. Some companies have more of an appetite for new drivers, some more of an appetite for the home and auto “account business.”
We are here for our customers whenever they have a claim problem or a billing question. We also offer free Registry of Motor Vehicles service.
MassAutoQuote will save you Benjamins!
We are Professional Insurance Advisors that have the best interest of our customers in mind. We offer multiple lines of insurance and as our customers lives change we are here to assist with all their insurance needs.
Your Independent Insurance Agent should offer a lifetime of insurance products and services:
Parents put their newly licensed child on their auto policy, the child buys his first car, he moves out of the house and gets an apartment, he opens a business, buys an engagement ring, gets married, buys a home, has a child, buys life insurance, puchases a personal liability umbrella policy, gets rich, buys a vacation property, buys the ’65 Mustang Shelby GT350, and retires.
MassAutoQuote through your local, Independent Agent will save you Benjamins.
For the past thirty years, or so, Massachusetts insurance consumers and Professional, Massachusetts Independent Agents have been pushed around by the insurance industry. Enjoying “state set” auto insurance rates, Massachusetts bloated to the fourth highest auto insurance rates in the country and withered to only 19 auto insurance carriers. It’s up to insurance professionals to show: Independent Agent Added Value.
As of April 1, 2008 Massachusetts moved to a “managed competition” system. This move has been good for most consumers with a statewide decrease in auto rates of almost 8%. The rate casualties seem to be those with 10 or more points on their license and new drivers.
With all the industry changes and as a small business owner, I’ve found myself working harder and longer. My wife and three babies wonder who this tie-wearing, slightly stressed out, stranger is. I continue to ask myself, as an Independent Insurance Agency: “Do we add value?” The emphatic answer: YES.

Disclosure: My name is Kevin Johnson and I am a Massachusetts, Independent Insurance Agency Owner.
I believe selecting the right MA independent insurance agent to take care of your insurance needs should not be an “eeny, meeny, miny, moe” decision. You are looking for a long-term relationship with someone you can trust. You wouldn’t buy a car without shopping around, and you shouldn’t select an independent agent without doing some research too. So what should you look for?
1. Know the Difference between Independent Agents and other Insurance Agents
An independent agent may be a small-business owner who represents a number of different insurance companies. In contrast, agents who represent large, national insurance companies are employees of their company and only sell products from that company. A direct insurance company sells directly to you without an agent, typically online. An independent agent has the opportunity to best match price and coverage for your needs, and if an insurance company is competitive one year but not the next, your independent agent can quote other carriers. That is why they are called independent.
2. Visit Their Website
Websites are full of information. Read about the history of the agency, the staff’s bios, their customer testimonials. See if their website provides insurance information and easy access to price quotes, either online or via telephone. Websites can give you a feel for the personality of the agency, what they think is important, and the type of customer service they provide.
3. How Long Have They Been In Business?
The Independent Agent business can be a hard business. If your not growing your shrinking. Agents come and go and Agencies get bought and sold. Is your Agent the owner? Owners have a vested interest in earning and keeping your business.
When you call do you get a familiar voice or an automated teller. Do they get back to you when you leave a message? How long does it take for them to get back to you?
4. Do They Answer the Phone?
It might sound silly, but when you call do you get a familiar voice or an automated teller? Do they get back to you if have to leave a message? How long does it take for them to get back to you? If they don’t get back to you when they are trying to earn your business, then they probably won’t get back to you when you have a claim or billing problem. Interview the independent agents you are considering: You should feel respect for their knowledge and get a sense about their integrity.
5. Knowledge and Trust Are Key
It is not so simple to determine knowledge and trust because these qualities are established over time. But you can start by asking the independent agents you are considering to explain the products they sell and how they determine which products, coverage and limits you need. This will give you a good feel for how the agent does business.
*Remember that your relationship with a good independent agent is likely to last a long time, so it pays to take the time to choose the right one for you.
As your independent agent, our job is to help you select the best coverage and limits and with the most competitive premiums from a variety of the insurance companies we represent.

You can get Massachusetts auto insurance quotes just about anywhere these days.
You can pick up the telephone, you can stop by an office, or you can get on the computer.
The question then becomes: Who do you want to buy insurance from?
There are three choices:
Buy insurance through a “captive agent.” A captive agent sells insurance for only one company
Buy insurance through a “direct writer,” such as the Geico. Consumers that buy direct do not have an agent to shop, make recommendations, and advocate for them at claim time.
Buy insurance through an “independent agent!”
When you buy insurance through MassAutoQuote, you’re buying through a Massachusetts Independent Insurance Agent.
