MA Inspection Stickers

Quoting auto insurance in MA – From a Massachusetts auto insurance consumer perspective, the most frustrating type of ticket is one for having an expired MA inspection sticker.

The violation is the cost of the ticket and a surcharge on your driving record for 6 years!

The 2 point surcharge is the same as the surcharge for a speeding ticket or other moving violation.

The Best Auto Insurance Rates in Massachusetts

The best drivers get the best auto insurance rates in Massachusetts. If you have been licensed over 6 years and have had no moving violations (speeding tickets etc) & no at-fault accidents then you are a “99” driver.

One of the most frustrating consumer tickets is for the expired, annual inspection sticker. Massachusetts requires registered vehicles pass the annual, $29 inspection. The surcharge penalty for an expired inspection sticker is the same as the surcharge penalty for a speeding ticket. So, take a look at your inspection sticker.

MA Inspection Sticker

Perhaps the cruelest of all surcharge points on the personal MA Auto Insurance Policy is the ”expired inspection sticker” citation.

In Massachusetts, a ticket for an expired vehicle inspection sticker is the equivalent, in auto insurance citation points, of a moving violation.

According to the MA Department of Insurance:

Surcharge points are incurred if you:

  • cause an at-fault accident
  • are convicted of or pay a fine for a traffic law violation
  • are assigned to an alcohol education program

An expired inspection sticker is considered “pay(ing) a fine for a traffic law violation.”

A $40 ticket results increased insurance costs for 6 years! About 20% increase the first three years, diminshing the following three .

Remember:  Check your MA Inspection Sticker — Don’t let it lapse!

Kids & Cars in Massachusetts

We’ve mentioned it many times on our http://www.Massautoquote.com blog & we’ll mention it again:  In Massachusetts, parents may want to consider, in order to best protect assets, consider registering and insuring a vehicle in their child’s name.  In Massachusetts parents are provided 100% insulation from lawsuits arising from bodily injury or property damage claims.

Mass. MGL Chapter 231, section 85A: “If a car is registered to the child and the child gets into an accident causing personal injury and/or property damage, there is no reponsibility on the parent. It does not make any difference who bought the car or who pays for the insurance, or how old the child is so long as we are talking about negligence.”

On this basis it might make sense for parents to consider insuring a vehicle in their child’s name.

MA Auto Insurance Case Study

Our MA independent insurance agency recently saved a new client money & was able to improve her coverage.

She has been licensed over 6 years with one moving violation. She has a 2007 Honda Accord and lives in Woburn, MA.

For coverage she carried “typical” MA auto insurance limits: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident (Parts 3, 5 & 12); $100,000 Property Damage; $500 Collision & Comprehensive deductibles; and $30 per day of Substitute Transportation.

Her renewal premium with Company A was: $1,194.

We rated her insurance with 7 companies.

With “apples to apples” coverage, for comparison purposes, we found a premium of: $952.

She was happy with the savings and decided to transfer her business to our Agency.

We mentioned if she purchased the company’s disappearing deductible & enhanced substitute transporation endorsement, and increased her collision deductible to $1,000 (really $800 with -$200 disappearing deductible credit), the annual premium would be: $844.

Thrilled, she was able to lower her premium from $1,194 to $844 and improve her coverage, as well!
