Cancel your MA Plates Online

Cancel your MA Registration (plates) online. Once cancelled, notify your MA auto insurance agent.

Did you know the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles allows MA consumers to cancel your auto registration (plates) online?

In order to cancel your MA auto insurance, you must first cancel your registration.

You can either bring your plates to your local Registry of Motor Vehicles branch, mail or drop off the plates to your agent, or you can cancel them online at:

https://secure.rmv.state.ma.us/PlateReturn/intro.aspx

In order to cancel them you will need: an e-mail address, your Plate type & Plate number, your license number, & the last four digits of your social security number.

Once you have cancelled your MA plates, you will want to notify your MA insurance agent & provide a copy of your Plate Return Receipt.

    1. I notice you MA plates were cancelled. You should be all-set, as long as you’ve notified your insurance agent, as well.

        1. Hi John, plates appear to have been cancelled November 3, 2020. No active plates on that vehicle. Best wishes, Kevin Johnson MassAutoQuote.com

  2. Hi, I am out the USA, I want to cancell two plates, my drivers license is S82992376 and plates it’s S23384 and 938SR4, with policy number 8610181 Safety Insurance, and I don’t more move to USA, sorry,

    1. My advice is to call your Safety Insurance Agent. They can cancel plates, as well as insurance, quickly. Otherwise, you can cancel plates online at: https://atlas-myrmv.massdot.state.ma.us/myrmv/_/#1

If successful, then you’ll want to notify agent, so they can remove vehicles/cancel policy.

We cannot cancel for you, because we’re just an insurance quote & advice website.

  3. I have a question, can a car insurance quote go up if I didn’t cancel? I had amica I cancelled my insurance but was told to cancel plates. First time driver in Massachusetts, didn’t know that needed to be done. I called amica for a quote for a new car. I was told I’m not eligible for a quote. So know cause of this my quotes are 150 and up a month. When I was paying 82 a month for car insurance and renters insurance. I even canceled on time I was also told I would receive partial money back. Need help need to register my car. Think it’s unfair cause this affected my record. Never received a email telling me to cancel plates took me a week for a manager to call me after. Several times of calling, theres agents that don’t care that thing up on me. Denied to put a manager or supervisor on the phone. Would have me on hold for 48 mins then hang up call on me. Especially around a time like this what’s going in the world. Thanks hope everyone stays safe.

    1. Hi. Sorry to hear what you’re going through. Auto insurance can be a tough business. Ideally the insurance company would have cancelled back to the date you got rid of the vehicle. We’d be happy to show you some numbers with other companies (we rate with 7 companies). You can e-mail info to me: KJ@ JohnsonandRohan.com (license # or name & date of birth) and year, make & model of new vehicle.

  4. I can’t cancel my registration online. I am a student at Northeastern University right now. When I was trying to cancel my registration I chose the foreign passport method because I don’t have SSN. But it doesn’t work. And I am trying to make a reservation but the type of cancel the registration doesn’t allow me to make an appointment. My plate is 8GS 647 and driver license is S67799715

  5. Hi,

I have a question in regards to vehicle plates. My car was in a accident and totaled in April 2020. I purchased a new vehicle and plan to transfer the registration and plates. The tow yard that had my totaled car left my plates in there “plate pickup mailbox” So I could pick them up. But when I picked them up, they only gave me 1 of my plates back. I’ve contacted them multiple times about my other plate, and also contacted the insurance company, and the insurance appraiser and cannot reach them. I do not want my registration cancelled if they sent the 1 plate back to the RMV. How can I prevent this from happening and how do I get a new replacement plate?

  6. Hi I bought a car from VA and I live in MA. I do not want this car anymore but I was told from the dealership in VA they do not have a refund policy. They sent me with a temporary registration, if I cancel my registration will that allow me to cancel this contract?

  7. Hi, I just moved out of state and tried to cancel my registration online, but when I entered my registration number and type, an error message came up that said “no active registration with that plate number and type.” I have just registered my vehicle in my new state but am having trouble canceling my MA registration. How do I proceed with returning my plates/cancelling registration? Thank you.

  8. Is there such a thing as a temporary relinquish of plates in Mass? I only drive my summer car 6 months out of the year and would like to avoid paying insurance for a car that is stored during the cold months. If not, must I re register my car every year and pay the $75 as well as reinspect when i get it registered? Thanks

    1. Unfortunately, in MA, there is no such thing as temporary relinquishing of plates. In order to cancel insurance, you have to cancel the plates, then get new ones when you’re ready.

  10. Hi I tried to cancel online. I didn’t have a Massachusetts license when I lived there. I tried to cancel it with just my SSN info but they couldn’t confirm my identification. Can I just mail this to the RMV just with the plate and nothing else?

    1. Hi Kevin, You don’t want to mail them back, the RMV won’t know what to do with them. I suggest you call your insurance agent and have them cancel for you.

  11. My Daughter was in a car accident and her car was totaled. She tried to cancel her plates online and gave all the correct information. An error pops up saying “no matching records”. She can’t turn in her plates in person because of Covid. She has already tried calling her insurance company and they told her she needs to cancel through RMV. She has also tried calling to RMV and waited on hold for over 2 hours. What is the next step as she doesn’t want to pay another month of insurance. We live in Colorado and she is going to school in Boston so we had no idea Mass requires you to turn in your plates.

  12. Where is the link to cancel the plates ?

Ado the plates need to be actually
Mailed back or is it simply
    Just removing the plates

Last , do the plates need to be cancelled if I switch the plates over to my new car ?

  13. Hi, I moved from MA to NJ and I would like to cancel/return my MA plates (6AT 826). However, I recently got married and I am in the process of changing my last name. Right now my NJ driver’s license has my married last name and my Social Security card has my maiden name. I believe that due to this, I am having issues canceling my MA plates online. Any help with this would be appreciated!

  14. I just cancelled my registration online today 8/23 because I am moving to Florida soon but it was premature. Can I stop the cancellation process and do it at a later point? Is there a number to call for this?

    1. Hi James, I’m afraid once you’ve cancelled your MA plates: they’re cancelled. I do not think you can stop the cancellation. You can try calling them at: 857-368-8000. It takes a while for them to pick up the phone. You might want to consider getting new plates.

  15. Hi Team,

I move from mass to NC and got a new plate and changed my insurance. I recently got a mail saying that my MASS registration is suspended since I don’t have a valid liability insurance policy. Is there anything I should do ??

  16. Hi, good afternoon. I recently moved to NJ from MA; I need to register my car; I know that I need to can’t my registration and then call my insurance to transfer me to my new insurance in NJ. Do I need to send my MA plates back to RMV, or do I not have to do it, and then I should recycle them in NJ?

    1. Hi, once vehicle is registered and insured in NJ, you will want to make sure your MA plates are cancelled (which will remove you from excise tax list). You can contact your agent and they should be able to help you cancel the plates or you can do so online at: https://atlas-myrmv.massdot.state.ma.us/myrmv/_/#0 (under Registrations: cancel my registration).
      Thank you.

  17. Our registration is in both mine and my husband’s name. We sold our car to a friend before we moved out of state and need to cancel our MA registration. It says we can’t do it online because there are 2 owners?

    1. HI Kelly,

I’m not sure about that one. I thought you could cancel online even if there are 2 owners of the vehicle. Perhaps call your insurance agent, and request that they cancel your plates for you.
      Best wishes,
