In order to cancel your Massachusetts Auto Insurance, you have to cancel your MA plates. Cancel My Massachusetts Plates is easier than it used to be. Rather than waiting in line at the Registry you can now cancel online at:  Cancel My Registration.

This is the link to the official website of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Once your plates are cancelled you must remember to notify your insurance agent or your company directly.

This no fee transaction allows you to cancel your registration and print out your Registration Cancellation Receipt. Once your plates are cancelled, you must then recycle or destroy the plates.

To continue, you will need your:

  • MA Registration Number
  • Email Address

And ONE of the following:

  • MA License/Permit/ID Number
  • 9 digit Social Security Number
  • FID Number (If vehicle is leased or registered to a company/corporation)

Keep this receipt as proof that you canceled your registration and provide a copy to your insurance company.

The receipt you print at the end of the transaction is in PDF format and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader that can be downloaded for free from Adobe.com.

  1. I was shocked to learn that before I could cancel my insurance and switch to another company, I had to cancel my registration!! How can that be? I have to re-register my car, get new plates before I can change insurance companies? Does that mean I have to pay a registration fee again?

    1. You don’t have to cancel your plates before switching to another company UNLESS you’ve moved out of Massachusetts. Then you have to get new plates.

      1. Oh! Well, I did move out of state. But I guess the mistake I made was getting new insurance on my car, then trying to cancel the old insurance before getting new plates. I had some problems with getting some documents for the registration so I was paying 2 premiums for 3 weeks. I guess that makes sense. I just wish the agent I bought the new insurance from would have alerted me to that. *Strange he could write a policy on a car still registered out of state.

Thank you so much for clarifying that. The agent I was with for decades was not helpful at all. Just told me “you have to cancel your registration first”. Would have been helpful if she’d added “because you moved out of state”.

    1. Hi Tyeisha, Your registration number is your plate number. Do you have the plate number?

      Best wishes,

  2. “In order to cancel your Massachusetts Auto Insurance, you have to cancel your MA plates” – where can I find this rule? the MA Division of Insurance (211 CMR 97.03 (2)) only states that “A Policyholder may cancel a Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, or any of its coverage parts, at any time.” It doesn’t say anything about canceling the plates unless I’m missing something?

    1. Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your comment/question. As I understand it, unless you’re cancelled for non-payment, underwriting reasons or transfer of insurers, the only way to cancel your MA insurance is to cancel your plates. Not sure if it helps, but the MA Division of Insurance also states:
      IMPORTANT NOTICE TO POLICYHOLDERS
You must have compulsory motor vehicle insurance in order to keep your motor vehicle registered
in Massachusetts. We have notified the Registrar of Motor Vehicles and you of our intent to non-
renew your motor vehicle insurance policy.
You must replace your policy as soon as possible. The Registrar of Motor Vehicles will cancel
your motor vehicle registration if it does not receive a new certificate of insurance covering your motor
vehicle before your current policy expires
